Complaint: On two occasions approximately 18 months apart, I have left my truck at a local car dealership for insurance repairs. The insurance company contracts with Enterprise to provide a rental vehicle while repairs are being made. On both occasions, Enterprise failed to provide me with a vehicle which had a full gas tank (which would then have been very easy to simply refill when I returned the vehicle–I was responsible for the gas). I asked the rental agent for a full tank of gas on the second occasion (after being ripped off the first time) and was told this was not possible. Having to return the car with a tank half full, for example, puts the consumer in the lose/lose position of either: 1) probably putting in more gas than he originally received (after some difficult estimations of how much gas to put in), or 2) paying Enterprise’s inflated gas charges for bringing the tank back to its original level. It is my understanding that this method of renting cars without full tanks is Enterprise’s official policy. Is this legal? It will certainly tend to penalize the consumer and make Enterprise extra money in the long run.
